B’ATZ’

B'atz'

SIGNIFICANCE OF GLYPH
The glyph signifies: the top is a cone which has time rolled up in and becomes uncoiled towards the bottom and reaches the globe of the earth passing through the angles that are both polarities, the masculine and the feminine.

THE DAY
This is the first day of the Mayan calendar. B’atz’ is the start, the beginning, the time; it is the day of the perpetual ceremonies and customs of our ancestors. This day is utilized to effect matrimonial and business ties, it’s a good day to bring things into order or to initiate any plans. It is a good day to ask for: predictions, protection for the artist, well being for the crops, to resolve any family problems. This is the day of the time; it is the day of creation of life and the beginning of intelligence. B’atz’ predicts the future; it is the history that is weaved into time, just like with a thread you weave a dress. It is the human gestation time for a child, it represents the umbilical cord. It is the beginning of life, of the infinite time, of the intelligence and wisdom. It symbolizes the cosmic phenomena, the original wisdom. It represents the infinite time and the unity, through this the man and woman are united and from this originates matrimony. Before the Mayas found the thread they used the palm (tree) (pop) to weave. This is the reason why it is called “Pop” the history written in the POP WUJ (sacred book with quiche origin). In the vegetation B’atz’ is symbolized with plants that climb. On the day Wajxaqib’ B’atz’ (8 B’atz’), the Mayan new year is celebrated as it corresponds to the thread of time that has once more rolled up our mother earth. Belejeb B’atz’ (9 B’atz’), is the day of the woman, of nature in it’s entirety. B’atz’ symbolizes the life of the human being, the possibility of lasting until the flame burns down or the thread is cut.

THIS DAY IS GOOD FOR
To ask for a job, to do projects, for engagements or matrimonial ties, to reinforce matrimonies and the societies; for all nature; to ask for things to be in order; to make plans; to protect the artist; help the dancers, musicians; gives grace in the dance; contract signatures; to resolve family matters; initiate any activity; to initiate treatments.

PRONUNCIATION BY ELDER MARIANO XUTUMIL

Cholab’ (Ab’) New Year

CodeximageAll great civilizations of the world have developed their own form of counting time, their calendar.  Maya civilization developed several different calendars, which they accomplished through their outstanding knowledge in astronomy and mathematics. It is thought they developed thirteen calendars, however only seven have been discovered, with three of them still being in use by the Maya people:

The Cholq’ij, a 260 day calendar still being used in the highlands of Guatemala by practitioners of Maya spirituality. This calendar is mentioned in the Popol Wuj, Memorial de Sololá and Rabinal Achí.

The Choltun, a 360 day calendar still being used by Maya intellectuals. This calendar is metioned in many steles located in ancient Maya cities.
The Cholab’, also known as Ab’ or the Long Count, is a 365 day calendar used mainly by Maya intellectuals. This calendar is mentioned in the yucatec books called Chilam B’alam.
Copan, HondurasThe 365 days of the Cholab’ are divided into 18 periods of 20 days each.  The number 20 arises from the cosmic and telluric energies of the fingers on the hands and toes on the feet.  There are the 360 days (18×20), plus a 5 day period known as the Wayeb. This last period of five days is known in the west as the unlucky or lost days, but in the traditional Maya world view it is a time for introspection and gratitude to the Ajaw (Creator and Former of life). It is a space and time dedicated to cleanse ourselves in the four levels: intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical.  It is a time to review our actions – every positive and negative thing we have done for the last 18 months and the impact it has had in our lives. It is a time to accept the things that have happened to us, accept our mistakes and understand that everything is part of our growth and evolution. It is a moment to ask for the forgiveness of the people we have hurt during the year.
Some of the ways in which Maya people prepare for this introspection are by either fasting or eating only fruits and vegetables, by using the Chuj (sauna) to detoxify their body and by doing several meditations. They also make a thorough house cleaning, throwing away the things that are no longer useful and giving away the things that can still be used.
The Wayeb’ (which is the name in Yucatec language) is also known as Tz’apiq’ij (in Ki’che’ language). Tz’apiq’ij means closing the door of the days, in other words it means that we have come to the end of a cycle of 365 days and that we are now in balance and we have renewed our energy, we are ready to begin a new year, we are ready in every level to receive the first day of the Cholab’. This first day will fill the whole year with its energy, in Maya language it is called patan (carrier of the year), because every day of the year will have the energy of this day. There are four energies that function as carriers of the year:
Kej – the deer, this energy represents stability.
E – the path, this energy represents the intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical paths.
No’j – wisdom and ancestral knowledge.
Iq’ – the air and the wind.
The first day of the Cholab’ calendar this year (2014) was on February 21. The carrier for this year is Kieb’ Kej (two deer). This year will bring stability and balance as its energy. As it is the year of the deer, Kej, who has a leg in each of the four cardinal points and sustains each of the four planes.  Seek for balance in your life, for you will find it.

The Tz’ite’

Tz'ite'B’alam was pretty excited to go with his grandfather to the mountain. They left very early in the morning, to the Sacred Mountain of Alux, to pick some Tz’ite’. These are the red beans used to communicate with Chuchqajaw (Mother and Father of the Universe). B’alam went to bed early so that he would wakeup as soon as his grandfather called him.

B’alam, B’alam,” his grandfather’s soft voice called still in the darkness of the early hours.

“Coming grandpa,” B’alam answered.

He dressed quickly and went with his grandfather to the family altar to ask for permission and blessings for the day’s activities. Tthey asked specially to find many Tz’ite’ seeds.

Grandfather and grandchild were walking along a path filled with fog of the Sacred Mountain of Alux. They were tukos, meaning they shared the same name, B’alam. For this reason the elder taught him with much love and dedication, for he will be his successor upon this earth. He told his grandson, “remember the Tz’ite’ should always be picked up with the first rays of the Sun, so that the communication with the energies will flow.” They continued climbing for a while.  When they reached a clearing, the first Tz’ite’ tree appeared. The pods were open with plenty of red seeds coloring the brown ground. They both kneeled and thanked Chuchqajaw for the beans had ripen and could be picked.

Tz'ite'“Son, the Tz’ite’ beans are picked with a lot of respect.” B’alam looked up and his wide black eyes lit with intrigue when he asked the elder: “Why grandpa?” “Because they are sacred,” the grandfather answered with a tranquility that comes with his years, “and before you touch sacred things you blow the palms of your hands, to clean them so that your energy will not take away the strength of the sacred.”  “What do you mean?” B’alam asks with more curiosity. “If the beans are on the ground they are dirty, why should I clean my hands before touching them?” “The beans are not dirty, they fell from the tree and are absorbing strength from Mother Earth, for us to communicate with the energy of Uk’u’x Ulew (Heart of the Earth)” “So through the beans we can only communicate with the energy of earth?”

“Of course not, the sacred red beans are very sensitive and they can communicate us with the Uk’u’x Kaj (Heart of the Heavens), Uk’u’x ja’ (Heart of Water), Uk’u’x I’q (Heart of the Air).  Because of this, their energy can see events that happen faraway and nearby, great events and small events. They can see the past and the future. The sensitivity of the red beans was discovered by the two times grandfather Ixpiyakok and the two times grandmother Ixmukane, and they left this inheritance to us. Remember, we eat black beans every day and sometimes we eat white and brown beans, but we never eat the red beans for they are sacred. The Tz’ite’ is the means of communication with all the creation energies. They answer all doubts to give you clarity on your path, and tell you what is favorable and what is not, for this it is sacred. But remember B’alam’ only the Ajq’ijab (spiritual guides) can ask to the Tz’ite’, for it has its secrets and if its energy is not used appropriately, it can harm you.  It’s like giving a knife to a two year old. First one has to learn how to use it.”

This is the fourth in a series of short stories written by Mayan Ajq’ij (spiritual guide) Lina Barrios from Guatemala. These stories are meant to share the knowledge and wisdom of the Mayan peoples with the world.

The Wayeb

The WayebFor 5,000 years the Maya have simultaneously used 20 different calendars for various purposes: agricultural, sacred, and predictions, amongst others.

The Hab’ is one of these Maya calendars. It has 18 months of 20 days each, plus a small month of 5 days, totaling 365 days. The Hab’ is the most accurate calendar of the ancient world. According to the most sophisticated computers, the length of a year is 365.2422 days and the calculations of the Maya are at 365.2420 days.

One of the most relevant things about the Hab’ are the 5 days prior to the New Year. This time is used to purify several aspects of one’s self, in order to receive the coming year with good energy. During these days people clean their homes, giving away the things that are no longer useful to them but might be useful to someone else. They paint their house, fast to eliminate accumulated toxins, and meditate and reflect on the offenses they have done to others, for which they apologize. They bathe in thermal springs or saunas to purify their bodies, practice sexual abstinence, and reflect upon whether or not they have fulfilled their goals – and why or why not. They doing a cleansing and seeking for balance in the four levels:

  • Material: by cleaning their body and their home
  • Spiritual: by cleaning their spirit
  • Emotional: by cleaning envies and bad feelings in their heart
  • Intellectual: by cleaning the bad thoughts of their mind

The goal is to find an understanding of why we did not accomplish certain purposes so as to not commit the same mistakes in the coming year.

For this reason this 5 day month receives the name of Wayeb’ in Yucatec Maya and Tz’apil in K’iche’ Maya.  The latter one means closing a door, for it is closing the door to the old year and receiving the new one cleansed in all levels to achieve happiness.
The WayebOn the first day of the year, people wear new clothes, with new energy to start the year without the burden of the previous one.  They also light a new fire, as the old fire was put out at the beginning of the Wayeb’.  During these five, days the fire, the comal (clay or metal dish used to make tortillas), the pot used to cook maize and the grinding stone rest – until a new fire is lit at the start of the new year.

The whole community is in a profound cleansing process to have a good beginning to the coming year. We will start the year, 5,200, on February 22, 2012. This day is also Oxlajuj (13) N’oj, which brings an energy of development, awareness, knowledge and wisdom to the year. It is a good year to learn from your experiences, acquire knowledge in all levels and increase your spiritual development.

If each year we cleanse ourselves, our path becomes easier, without many burdens. Our baggage becomes lighter, our health becomes better, we will be happier, more understanding, our life will flow easier into the universe, things will be solved faster.  If we climb a mountain carrying a 50 pound bag it will be tough climb, but if we are carrying a 10 pound backpack we will walk faster, without getting that tired.  We will enjoy the view, breathe the air, we will not need to rest too often and we will reach the peek faster to enjoy the beautiful view from the top. This is the difference we make in our life if we cleanse ourselves every year. The funny thing is that we service our car when we have driven it for a number amount of miles, assuring it will last longer and be in better condition, but we don’t service ourselves. The Wayeb’ or Tz’apil is the service that the Maya people make, not to cars – to themselves.

This is the third in a series of short stories written by Mayan Ajq’ij (spiritual guide) Lina Barrios from Guatemala. These stories are meant to share the knowledge and wisdom of the Mayan peoples with the world. This story relates to the 5 day month known as the Wayeb, which occurs from 2/17 through 2/21 2012 on the Gregorian Calendar.

2012

2012Ixkotzij (flower woman) and her sister went with their mother to visit their grandfather, Kawoq.  They visited him every 13 days, since he lived far away.  The two sisters were very excited to see him.  He was often smiling, as he liked to tease them, and he always answered all the questions the girls asked, even the most difficult ones. From moment they left the house, Ixkotzij began thinking of a difficult question to ask her grandfather. He taught them no to be content with an “I don’t knowjust becausewho knows”; or that type of answer. He said everything had a reason and they were entitled to know it.

Grandfather Kawoq had gray hair, which he was starting to lose.  When you came into his house you could listen to an old radio playing marimba music. While Ixkotzij’s mother and sister where preparing food in the kitchen, she asked her grandfather the question she had planned for this visit.  “Grandpa, why are people in the city saying that the world will end in 2012? What are all those Maya prophecies about? And how come you never told me anything about it? I think that is not fair, you never warned us.”

Grandfather Kawoq smiled and told her in a pleasant voice:  “Our ancestors, the grandfathers and grandmothers, have never said the world is going to end.  That’s why I didn’t say anything to you. Our grandfathers and grandmothers have taught us to take care of Mother Earth, to not destroy her.  So the world is not going to end.  Hasn’t your mother taught you not to waste water, to use just the wood that you need?  Hasn’t you father taught your brother to cut the wood on a full moon so that it will last for many years, and to use the branches of old trees? Don’t you remember that as a child you helped pick up the branches from the woods so that we did not have to cut many trees?  Our grandfathers and grandmothers have taught us these and many other things.  They taught us to love Mother Earth, to ask her permission before we take anything from her, but they have never taught us that the world is going to end. I think that the people who are saying the world will end are saying so because they know deep inside that they are destroying Mother Earth, and they feel bad about it.”;
Fire

Grandfather Kawoq stood silently, meditating for a while, then he continued:
“In the big cities everything works with electric power – even the stairs work with electric power.  They use it for the elevators, to carry their water, to wash and dry their clothes, and to cook their food.  They use it for everything. What would happen if they no longer had electric power?  There are many things they won’t be able to do.  But what happens to us? Not much.  If there is no electric power, our world continues to be the same. Our houses, at most, have two stories – not 40, 60 or 90 like the buildings in big cities.  We bring our water from the river in pitchers.  We hand wash our clothes.  We enjoy drying them with the energy of Father Sun, because his energy and strength is imprinted on our clothes. We pick wood from the forest to cook our food and keep our house warm. But in big cities, if they don’t have electric power, their world somehow ends, because they are fragile.  They don’t live in harmony with Mother Earth.  Unlike us, they live away from her.  Everything in their world is artificial.  Their world depends on electricity, on fuel, on a car.  We live in contact with nature. We take care of Mother Earth in the same way she takes care of us.  Our world will not end, so don’t worry my beloved Ixkotzij.”

This is the second in a series of short stories written by Mayan Ajq’ij (spiritual guide) Lina Barrios from Guatemala. These stories are meant to share the knowledge and wisdom of the Mayan peoples with the world.

The Perfect Complement

The Perfect ComplementIn order to keep the long-standing tradition, Ixkab’ (woman of honey) finishes the third and final cloth used to make a huipil (blouse) for her youngest daughter. Her heart is joyful, she has woven all the necessary cloths to make her husband’s, daughter’s and her own clothing. Early in the morning she will give her beloved husband all the cloths so he can begin putting them together to maintain the complement of energies. He will sit in their house, at the corridor, for 20 days with a basket full of threads to sew the huipiles, cortes (skirts), trousers and shirts, and he will have them ready before theHab’ (the New Year) so that the whole family will wear new clothes.

He has enough time, as it is still 25 days to the Hab’. He will sew for 20 days, until the start of the month prior to the New Year, known as the Tz’apil.  The Tz’apil is a month of only five days, which are used for purification in order to begin the New Year with a clean body, spirit, heart and mind – as well as with new clothes.

Ixkab’ thought of how sad it was when those machines came to town… “What are they called?… Singer?… What is the meaning of that name? It is not a Maya name, who knows in what language it is, these machines come from elsewhere. These machines are breaking with the tradition of our people. How is it possible that men, instead of sitting in the corridor, are paying a stranger to put together their clothes in these machines?” They say the machines sew better than the hands of the men, but Ixkab’ thought her husband did a better job, for he did it with love, just as she did when she wove the cloths. “Our daughter will feel that love, the love we have for her, my husband will feel the love I have for him… How can a metal, a cold metal give love to people? Surely people were wrong, our grandmothers taught us to weave joyfully and to imprint love to the cloths, our grandfathers taught the men to sew the cloths together with strength and love…”

“We must continue this complementing, as we were taught from the time of Creation, when Tz’aqol the former of matter and B’itol the giver of breath, when Alom the female energy and K’ajolom the male energy, when Tepew, who is stability and Q’uq’kumatz who is movement, when Uk’u’x Kaj who is the heavens and Uk’u’x Ulew who is earth, when Uk’u’x Palow who is salt water and Uk’u’x Cho who is fresh water, when Grandmother Ixmukane and Grandfather Ixpiyako’k created human beings with the nine beverages of maize. They taught us the importance of this complementing in order to have balance, to find peace.” Ixkab’s thoughts continued thinking of all the energies of creation and she concluded that women alone could not do the family’s clothing, both man and woman had to work together to complement each other. It is similar to having children, she thought, a woman alone cannot have children, a man alone cannot have children; love, harmony and complementing are necessary.

This short story is a reflection of the complementing of Maya men and women, values that have been with them since the time of Creation, together with the respect they have for Mother Earth, the solidarity and community service, all of which are the pillars of Maya wisdom.

This is the first in a series of short stories written by Mayan Ajq’ij (spiritual guide) Lina Barrios from Guatemala.  These stories are meant to share the knowledge and wisdom of the Mayan peoples with the world.

Najt Portal – Ab’ Maya New Year

Lords of TimeThe Maya civilization is one of the most extraordinary that has existed. They are know as THE LORDS OF TIME with their high technology, deep knowledge of time, mathematics, astronomy, architecture and the advances they made on medicine and all the fields of human knowledge – which still amaze us. For the Maya world the NAJT is the convergence of Space and Time in one unique place, which, when you add movement and speed, gives us the configuration and perception of REALITY.

We are facing transcendent times. On December 21, 2010, two cosmic events converged: the Winter Solstice and a Full Moon Eclipse. This day opened a Cosmic-Telluric portal, which is the preamble for the famous change of Cycle, the end of the 5,200 years and the coming of the JOB AJAW on December 21, 2012.

This event is called “The Opening of the NAJT PORTAL” and it has a greater effect during the cycle between December 21 and February 22, 2010. The energies of the NAJT (space-time) are in constant movement and everything we plan or decide will generate an energy that will make it become real; for which is very important to be clear about the purposes and thoughts we create during this time. This is the perfect moment to give space to the NEW HUMAN BEING and to be in harmony with KAK ALOM, the spirit of MOTHER EARTH.

The WAYEB, a cycle of the Maya Ab’ Calendar, began on Thursday, February 17. The Ab’ Calendar has 18 months of 20 days each and an extra month of 5 days: the WAYEB. This last month, to the traditional world of the Mayan Elders, is a time of introspection and encounter with one’s self, during which you must make an analysis of your life, reviewing your purposes and how you have accomplished them. This is a time for meditation, renovation and to project your real purpose in life. It is the opportunity to create the balance between the material and the spiritual world.

We invite you to do an inner job taking advantage of the energies that rule during this moment… find your inner self… meditate… analyze your life… write everything you think is important… project those things you want to accomplish; remember that this is a personal goal between the GREAT SPIRIT AND YOURSELF.

To culminate this cycle and open the space for the NAJT PORTAL, we will have a traditional Maya Fire Ceremony to celebrate the end of the WAYEB and the beginning of the AB’ MAYA NEW YEAR, on Tuesday, February 22, 2011. 19:20 is the best time of the day to connect with these energies. If you are not near a sacred place, light 20 candles to invoke the energy of the 20 Nawales. You can also light incense and connect with the fire of the candles, while you focus your thoughts and prayers to JUN AB KU heart of the heavens and KAK ALOM heart of Mother Earth.

Message for Winter Solstice 2010

The following message was delivered by Carlos Barrios and translated by his daughter Denise Barrios.

winter_solstice_candlesThe Winter Solstice is the day in which the night is longer than the day. To many of the ancient civilizations this date marked the beginning of the year. The Maya Elders say that during this moment, the Sun is young and it is the perfect time to plan our purposes for this New Year. We must take this opportunity to ask for our personal and common wishes, bearing in mind that what’s most important is to ask for light and harmony, specially for Mother Earth; to pray for peace and spiritual growth.

The importance of this date is the opportunity we will have to connect with thousands of people throughout the planet that will be making their rituals and ceremonies to absorb this energy.

Whatever your faith, we ask you to take ACTION, which should be the spirituality of nowadays. We ask you to participate in a ritual or ceremony, on a prayer, or even just to light a candle and ask for humanity to be again in harmony with Mother Nature, to ask for people to have a communitary purpose instead of selfishness, to ask that the energy opens a channel for people to connect with spirituality.

Message From the Mayan Elders – February 2006

by Carlos Barrios

fireA lot has been said about this time, about the prophecies given by ancient wise visionary men. Some of the prophecies have been kept on secret books, some have been transmitted in a verbal way, others have risen in a series of books, documentaries, articles in magazines, newspapers and especially on the Internet. Some are extremely alarming, others have no basis and many are based on the Prophecies of the Great Traditions. All of them point out the prophetical times, as the Wise Chi Mam Maya, Don Pascual liked to call them.

All this information has wakened the interest of millions of people, but it has also created a lot of confusion and fear, since the date of December 21 of 2012 has been used as the date of the end of the World. However, this date points out the beginning of a new cycle, which is marked in the tradition of the Mayan Elders as a time of harmony and spiritual growing, this cycle is called the FIFTH SUN and each of the previous ones lasted 5,200 years.

The first cycle was of a feminine energy and fire was the element that ruled it.

The second cycle was of a masculine energy and earth was the element that ruled it.

The third cycle was of a feminine energy and air was the element that ruled it.

The fourth cycle was of a masculine energy and water was the element that ruled it.

The fifth cycle is of harmony between the masculine and feminine energy and the element that will rule it will be ether.

Each of these cycles last 5,200 years and they have been affected by the polarity of the masculine or feminine energy and of course they have also been affected by the elements. Today we are at the door of the end of the fourth cycle, which ends on December 20th of 2012, six years from now. During these six years we will be witnesses to the confrontation of the Negative and Positive forces, the eternal fight amongst polarity, the fight between the Eternal Fire and the Eternal Ice, as the Great Masters have named it, rough and magical times, prophetic times, as the Master, Don Pascual, would have said.

We do not have to close our eyes to be able to see who is dominating at this time, unlike of the Beings of Light, on the other side there is no doubt of who the boss is and no one argues about the grades of power, they work with an effectiveness, so effective that some of them even manage to appear as Warriors of Light.

The opposite happens with the Warriors of Light, because unfortunately most of them are spellbound with their Ego, convinced that they are the best and the carriers of the Truth, but they are only interested on their fight for power, fame and their excessive fondness for economical wealth.

Someone has to raise the Torch of Light and create consciousness; these leaders have to come back to their path. They have to find their path once again and assume the responsibility that was given to them at the time they received their grade of guide and the magical power that accompanies them, this is the calling of the Ancient Mayan Elders, of which the doors to build up our destiny are open… The Wise Elders are tired of waiting, they have sent this message previously and today, knowing the delicacy of this year, the violence, insanity, the tiredness of our Mother Earth, that regardless of the advise she has sent us (hurricanes, floods, droughts, The Tsunami, etc.) we are still impassive, destroying 10,000 acres of forest each day, letting 100,000 people, most of them children, die of starvation, and to us, this is just another news which does not affect us directly. A year ago the Tsunami stunned us, fear and panic grew, today this is just a vague memory. However, we have to be blind not to see we have to give a stop to this destruction, today we are alarmed with the cruel winter, with the torrential rains that are coming out of season, we also witnessed a tropical storm that was almost to become a hurricane, this without even speaking of the earthquakes in all the continents.

This was already predicted by the Prophets and visionary Mayans, as well as the attack to Iraq (with a precise date, two years before it happened), and the Terrorist Attacks (the one of the Twin Towers, the ones of France and Spain, and the ones to come).
The Mayan Elders are expecting that in the laps of the next two years there will be a great explosion of magma in the Yellowstone Park, this explosion would have the effect equivalent to the destruction that several atomic bombs would cause, giving as a result a great matter of contamination and pollution.

We are also expecting the imminent attack to Syria and the possibility of an attack to Iran, as well as the trying of overthrowing and putting a stop to the Socialist Democratic Movements that are rising in Latin America, specially the one of President Chavez in Venezuela. The last predictions, we can still put a stop to, but we have to use our powerful weapons, the inner magic in each of us, our fire ceremonies, meditations and any other techniques. It is URGENT to stop the madness of war.

The transcendence of the ending of this fourth cycle lies in the fact that we are once again in the doors of building up our destiny, the history of the actual humanity (the fourth).

The other humanities did not succeed with the purpose of taking our Mother Earth to the age of gold, the age of nobility, love, equality, peace, conscience, the Kingdom of Great Spirituality, in which every being has its space and value and where we can all grow in a simple word HARMONY, which is the premise of the Mayan World.

This marvelous opportunity is linked to Mother Earth, who as a living entity, has once again the chance of acceding to the Fifth Sky, this means to vibrate on a more subtle energy ruled by the element ETHER. This opportunity was wasted by the three previous humanities and it took Mother Earth millions of years to redo the proper conditions again.

The actual humanity, like the previous, has reached an extraordinary technological development, but it has forgotten the spiritual balance and the responsible relationship with Nature, which we are destroying and polluting more and more each time.

This was predicted by the visionary and wise Mayan Aj’Kijab (shamans), every event that is occurring, the plagues, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, thaws, weather changes, wars, uncontrollable viruses, the contamination and damage we are causing Nature, our own Mother, however, we remain passive as spectators, not doing or saying anything, we are accomplices who rather follow the routine that is imposed to us, the fake illusions that make us believe that we are people of success, of that success that is only the vision of a consumer materialist society and we sell our life in order to have this distractions and not confront reality, since we do not have the courage to go into our inner selves and get to know and accept us, the most important thing is to keep an image and the sterile competence of an uncontrollable urge to run, that rush to get nowhere…

We have the responsibility and possibility to change the destiny, we have our weapons, and what is most important WE ARE MORE… And we are not talking violence; our weapons are meditation, sacred ceremonies, the thought of millions of people, the amazing power of mind, creating the harmony of love, respect and spreading conscience. We can create conscience in others, we can speak, write and demonstrate that it is necessary to stop the destruction, the contamination, that we have to stop being accomplices and that our voice should be heard, that we should write to the media, to the people that run the governments, for we should remember that they are public servants and not owners of the countries, and if they receive millions of letters and e-mails, they will have to give us their attention, but lets just remember that violence is not the answer, do not look for the answer on the intellect and the strength, the answer is in the power of your heart…

We think we own the earth… Will you own it 200 years form now? Elders say the earth owns us, as a mother that nurtures us. Lets be consequent to her, lets not let the shadows fall again on her…

A Call from the Mayan Elders To the Human Race – 2005

Mayan Elders 2005“The light is within us; let us work for our destiny-our destiny to better the human race. Let us become more aware of our actions; let us be more compassionate to our fellow human begins and to ourselves.” This is a call for us to listen to our Mayan Elders.

Don Pascual (a Mayan elder) would tell me “we are living in the time of the Prophecy, a difficult time.” Don Pascual was a member of the Clan de Aguila (The Eagle Clan) my mentor, and my spiritual guide and was one of the greatest wise men. Don Pascual belonged to one of the oldest organizations in the Mayan World, believed be over thousand years old. Not only did they preserve the pure magic and mystic of the ancestral world back then, but the same tradition has been preserved and is still being followed to this day. Don Pascual was a Chimam (Aj’qij), a wise Shaman, belonging to the nation of the MAM (the oldest people) located in Huehuetenengo, Guatemala.

Don Pascual would tell me the following message: “the convergence of the Great Cycle has come back to the visionaries, not only in our traditions but also, other traditional tribes. In this Epic time that we are living, we will be seeing and experiencing destruction, confrontations, intolerance, irrationality, religious radicals, wars. There will be diseases that we have not seen or known, plagues, floods, earthquakes, droughts, hurricanes, and Mother Earth will grow hotter. And the saddest thing is that we see all of what is happening around us and we will be passive, doing nothing, because we are so involved with our daily lives and our material needs that we will take things for granted. If we would stop and listen to Mother Earth, we would recognize that she is protesting and telling us to pay attention to her needs that we, as the human race, have taken for granted. She is saying that we have also been irresponsible, causing contamination and not stopping the destruction. How you ask? We are accomplices for letting a few unscrupulous humans destroy hundreds hectares of forest everyday, factories that contaminate the atmosphere and for what? To consume those products that in reality we do not need nor want. But it is offered to us to make our lives easier and happier. With this we only show the unconscious actions and our passive attitude we have because we are programmed to live our lives in the most comfortable way without thinking what we are doing to our Mother Earth. If we do not stop what we are doing and change our attitude and be more conscious we can only wait and see what our Mother Earth will unleash, as she will started correcting all the error that we have done to her. And that is how the end of the cycle will commence, and that is how part of humanity will disappear. But we still have time. We do not see the disposition, the consciousness, the unity. We only see the madness, consumerism, illegal drugs, alienation and big egos. Not caring what we are doing to our Mother Earth. We must be more conscious before it is to late.”
My teacher Don Pascual told these wise and prophet words to me in 1997. (Ref. KAM WUJ El Libro del Destino, Carlos Barrios. L. Squirru Ed. Sudamericana, 1999).

I could only remember his look, gazing to the distance and looking into the future. I remembered the fog around us and the Cuchumatanes Mountains in the horizon.
I want to believe that we are still in time!

Several days ago, I received a call from the Elders, the heirs of Don Pascual, from the Eagle Clan. They are always courteous when they call, but this time I noticed a serious tone at the other end of the line. “We have been trying to get in touch with you, since December. We are concerned with what is happening to our Mother Earth.” Since they have always been direct to the point, they started telling me that the Mother Earth is in despair, unleashing her furor at us, sending us Hurricanes, Droughts, and just recently the Earthquake followed by the Tsunami that provoked floods, and killing our fellow brothers and sisters in Asia and Africa. But according to the Elders this is only the beginning of what is to come. In the five Continents there will be floods and earthquakes. In our country we have already three volcanoes erupt. In Mexico, the Popocapetel is also active. In the Western Coast of the United States, as well in parts of Europe, it has been raining non-stop and causing floods. We must remember that Guatemala is the Torch of Light and our call and our message to all of our Brothers and Sisters is that we need your help. We have already begun performing ceremonies since December.

But that is not enough. We need the help of our Brothers and Sisters in order to continue our mission. We need to perform at least a Thousand ceremonies, but the ideal would be Two Thousand Six Hundred. We would appreciated it if everyone would donate ten dollars in order to buy material to keep on doing our ceremonies and to give thanks to our Mother Earth for what we have. That is why I am coming to you to give you the message of what the Elders told me the other day. And tomorrow the 18 January, which is an important day in the Mayan Calendar (Chol’qij) 9 Keme, which means the change in cycle and to give away to the bad energy, we will be doing a ceremony tomorrow along with the Shaman’s of the Amazon and the Andes. The Elders are asking all of you to please light a fire, light a candle, to meditate, anything that comes with in you and this must be done before sunset or during sunset. And not during the night, for we are trying to eliminate the dark. On this day we will commence our ceremonies and meditations and will be focusing on our Mother Earth to ask her for her forgiveness and for her to guide us with her light so we can unite our energies and transmit love and positive force to our friends and invite everyone to join our cause to change our destiny. From this day forward until July 18 (8Kiej which is the day that the Mother Earth opens her heart to us and connects with the hand of God). So, it is important that everyday before sunset we make our fire ceremonies, light candle, meditation, etc.

The most important days for the celebration are: January 18; February12, which is the Mayan New Year; And the 18th of July. The Elders are also inviting anyone who is interested to come to Guatemala before the 12th of February. That day (8 Baatz) is the New Year in the Cholq’ij Calendar and we will be celebrating our New Year with ceremonies. And also on the 18th of July we would like to invite everyone to come and join us for the last ceremony which will be in the sacred ceremonial center of Tikal.
