We are all but souls exploring an unexplored world, trying to understand an unexplained existence. During these paths of learning, our surroundings and those around us have gifted us with our values, a set of rules we would need to live by. “Be kind”, they said “be brave, and always try to be the best version of yourself.” These are beautiful teachings that, unfortunately, have caused much harm.

When trying to be pure love and light, we are giving the message that there is something inherently wrong within us, that we do not accept ourselves fully. Aq’ab’al teaches us that just as the day needs the night, we too need our inner darkness. The shadow we hold is a true gift that helps us in so many ways: by establishing limits, showing respect, self-love and compassion. Let us not miss life’s full spectrum of emotions and make a small shift in our dialogue “be kind, but it is okay to put healthy limits.” “Be brave, but be courageous enough to give space for fear,” and, “while there is always room for growth, there is so much power in self-acceptance, knowing you already are your best version.”
No somos más que almas explorando un mundo inexplorado, buscando comprender una existencia inexplicable. A lo largo de este camino de aprendizaje, nuestro entorno y quienes nos rodean nos han transmitido una serie de valores, un conjunto de reglas que debemos seguir en nuestras vidas. “Sé amable”, nos decían, “sé valiente y trata siempre de ser la mejor versión de ti mismo”. Son enseñanzas hermosas que, lamentablemente, han causado mucho daño.
Al intentar ser solo amor y luz, nos estamos dando el mensaje de que hay algo intrínsecamente malo en nosotros, que no nos aceptamos plenamente. Aq’ab’al nos enseña que, al igual que el día necesita de la noche, nosotros también necesitamos nuestra oscuridad interior. La sombra que llevamos dentro es un verdadero regalo que nos ayuda de tantas maneras: estableciendo límites, mostrando respeto, amor propio y compasión. No nos privemos del espectro completo de emociones de la vida y hagamos un pequeño cambio en nuestro diálogo: “Sé amable, pero está bien poner límites saludables”. “Sé valiente, pero ten el coraje suficiente para dar espacio al miedo” y “si bien siempre hay espacio para crecer, hay mucho poder en la autoaceptación, sabiendo que ya eres tu mejor versión”.
