On the fourth day of Tz’apiq’ij, according to the teachings shared with me by my father, Tat Carlos Barrios, he dedicated it to defining. This is the day to outline our goals, the direction we want our year to take and the steps we will take to move closer to the path we wish to walk. Let us ask ourselves what makes us happy or unhappy, what we want from life and what prevents us from accomplishing it. We should plan and determine what we want at every level, the growth we seek in the physical/material, mental, emotional and spiritual realms. Let us make a list for each of these planes, decide with awareness what changes we will make, take into account whether it is possible for us to make these changes and how we will carry them out. Let us remember that many times to achieve great changes we have to begin with many small changes.
Let us remember that when we have clarity about where we are, we can envision what we want to reach. In this exercise, it is important to give space to curiosity and to notice whether what we are projecting awakens emotion and passion within us, since that will be what gives us the impulse to explore, to act and not remain held back by fear or complacency. Let us walk this year along the path that fills us, where our way of moving through life is authentic and passionate. Today Kab’lajuj Kan helps us connect with the energy of passion and helps us keep our attention active and focused on what we do and what we think, without leaving space to chance, but working from intuition and action.

On the second day of Tz’apiq’ij, according to the teachings shared with me by my father, Tat Carlos Barrios, he dedicated it to acceptance. This is the moment to free ourselves from our attachments, without giving space to regret or to “what ifs”, for we cannot turn back time or erase what we have done, but we can transform our possibilities and project a new destiny. Remembering the past is important, for from it arise our experience, our knowledge, and our growth, but it is even more important to create new opportunities in the present.
On the second day of Tz’apiq’ij, according to the teachings shared with me by my father, Tat Carlos Barrios, he dedicated it to self-recognition. This is the day to become aware of who we truly are, being honest with ourselves, without lying or making excuses, regardless of whether we like what we see or not, simply observing ourselves without judgment or harshness, just honesty.
According to the teachings shared with me by my father, Tat Carlos Barrios, the way he practiced his Tz’apiq’ij was by focusing each day on a specific aspect. The first day he devoted to review. This is the day to reflect on what took place over the past year, if we celebrated Tz’apiq’ij the previous year, to look at what had been projected and see what turned out well, to understand why something that had been planned did not take place and what reasons prevented our intentions from being fulfilled. Today it is important to review our path, to see how we are and where we stand, to go deeper and determine what has brought us to where we are. We can write down the events that have occurred and the things that will later help us define the next cycle.
Today we begin the last month of the Haab’ year, called Tz’apiq’ij or Wayeb’ —in the Yucatec Maya language—.
Let us not forget that we did not come here merely to exist, we came to be and to create.
May the gifts we carry within not remain dormant. May we have the courage to activate them and use them.
The fact that we are all different is precisely what gives balance and meaning to life.
We have great power, the question is are we using it?
Let us not forget that the way we choose to look at life creates the reality we live.
