Over twenty-five years ago, a path was opened, a path that emerged from a shared vision to create a space where the Wisdom of the Maya could be shared with the Western world, while honoring and supporting the lineages that have carried this knowledge through time. This vision was held by Adam Rubel and my father, Elder Carlos Barrios, and it was also a response to the request of the Maya Elders who knew that the ancestral spiritual tools they held would be needed to help us walk through this time. It was time to share them with the world. That is how the foundation stone of Saq’ B’e was laid.
There are many stories we could share of the road we have walked together, many moments shared between those of us who have been part of it and all of you who have walked with us and supported us over the years. But today I want to focus on what we are celebrating on this day.
I met Adam and his partner Zoraida more than two decades ago during their travels to Guatemala. Since then we have shared many moments and we have even seen our children be born and grow. Our shared story as Saq’ B’e began seventeen years ago, when we spoke about me traveling to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Saq’ B’e is based, to bring the teachings and tools of the Maya so they could be experienced in person.
Since then we have created and supported many projects together. One of them began twelve years ago today, when we decided to start writing daily texts to share the meaning of the Cholq’ij energy of each day, which is what we are celebrating today. When I realized it has already been twelve years, it was hard to believe how much time has passed. It still feels like yesterday when we were thinking of bringing this into being. But the thread of time unravels fastly, and sometimes you just notice it in things like realizing our website, after more than twenty years of existence, was outdated and needed to be renewed.
Today, we celebrate this by taking another step forward on the path of Saq’ B’e. We are happy to share our new website, with the Maya day calculator running again, and everything holding a renewed energy, like a rebirth and a new cycle that we begin.
When I look back, I feel gratitude for all we have walked together. For the small seed that was planted so many years ago which has grown stronger, and in the hopes that it will continue to flourish and expand, bringing the wisdom of the ancestral traditions that is still much needed to help us transit these times of change.
