From the Traditions
Thousands of years of conquest and progress have delivered modern society to the verge of destroying our only home. As cultures have been absorbed by an increasingly homogenized society, we find ourselves being led into a way of life that further disconnects and alienates us from ourselves, our families, our community and our mother earth. As the thrust of globalization expands this dominant culture’s reach into even the most remote parts of the planet, absorbing the remaining cultures, many of those born or living in the modern world recognize the destructive direction in which we are being led. Many of us wish to alter the course of our lives and the direction which we are heading as a planet. Many of us in this modern world continue to seek an alternative to the destructive path we seem destined for. Instinctually, intuitively, intellectually we realize that we must come to live in a different way - a way that leads to harmony and respect rather than dominance and exploitation.

Fortunately, there are peoples around the planet that have maintained their traditional culture, perspective and spiritual connection. Many of the Indigenous peoples have preserved, during what can be viewed for them as very dark ages, many of the keys for restoring harmony upon the earth and ways for re-awakening the inner wisdom and spiritual connectedness that we all posses. For many years, and in some cases to this day, these teachings have been kept from outsiders. For those of us in the modern world, we have the good fortune that there are those, whose ancestors had given their lives to preserve their ancient ways, are now willing to help us to re-awaken, reconnect, harmonize and unite as brothers and sisters. We must always be mindful of the embedded culture of exploitation that a world out of balance has brought us. But if we face these obstacles, we can come to receive the gifts brought through the many ancestors so that we may once again find our roots in this earth and heal the wounds of the past.

In this section, we will feature writings and teachings by those that carry forth the real knowledge and wisdom of their ancestors. May these teachings guide us in fulfilling our mission in restoring harmony upon our mother earth.

This is the fourth in a series of short stories written by Mayan Ajq'ij (spiritual guide) Lina Barrios from Guatemala. These stories are meant to share the knowledge and wisdom of the Mayan peoples with the world.

TziteB'alam was pretty excited to go with his grandfather to the mountain. They left very early in the morning, to the Sacred Mountain of Alux, to pick some Tz'ite'. These are the red beans used to communicate with Chuchqajaw (Mother and Father of the Universe). B'alam went to bed early so that he would wakeup as soon as his grandfather called him.

"B'alam, B'alam," his grandfather's soft voice called still in the darkness of the early hours.
"Coming grandpa," B'alam answered.

He dressed quickly and went with his grandfather to the family altar to ask for permission and blessings for the day's activities. Tthey asked specially to find many Tz'ite' seeds.

The Wayeb

DSC01136This is the third in a series of short stories written by Mayan Ajq'ij (spiritual guide) Lina Barrios from Guatemala. These stories are meant to share the knowledge and wisdom of the Mayan peoples with the world. This story relates to the 5 day month known as the Wayeb, which occurs from 2/17 through 2/21 2012 on the Gregorian Calendar.

For 5,000 years the Maya have simultaneously used 20 different calendars for various purposes: agricultural, sacred, and predictions, amongst others.

The Hab’ is one of these Maya calendars. It has 18 months of 20 days each, plus a small month of 5 days, totaling 365 days. The Hab’ is the most accurate calendar of the ancient world. According to the most sophisticated computers, the length of a year is 365.2422 days and the calculations of the Maya are at 365.2420 days.

One of the most relevant things about the Hab’ are the 5 days prior to the New Year. This time is used to purify several aspects of one’s self, in order to receive the coming year with good energy. During these days people clean their homes, giving away the things that are no longer useful to them but might be useful to someone else. They paint their house, fast to eliminate accumulated toxins, and meditate and reflect on the offenses they have done to others, for which they apologize. They bathe in thermal springs or saunas to purify their bodies, practice sexual abstinence, and reflect upon whether or not they have fulfilled their goals - and why or why not. They doing a cleansing and seeking for balance in the four levels:

  • Material: by cleaning their body and their home
  • Spiritual: by cleaning their spirit
  • Emotional: by cleaning envies and bad feelings in their heart
  • Intellectual: by cleaning the bad thoughts of their mind

SAM0706This is the second in a series of short stories written by Mayan Ajq'ij (spiritual guide) Lina Barrios from Guatemala. These stories are meant to share the knowledge and wisdom of the Mayan peoples with the world.

Ixkotzij (flower woman) and her sister went with their mother to visit their grandfather, Kawoq.  They visited him every 13 days, since he lived far away.  The two sisters were very excited to see him.  He was often smiling, as he liked to tease them, and he always answered all the questions the girls asked, even the most difficult ones. From moment they left the house, Ixkotzij began thinking of a difficult question to ask her grandfather. He taught them no to be content with an "I don't know, just because, who knows"; or that type of answer. He said everything had a reason and they were entitled to know it.

Grandfather Kawoq had gray hair, which he was starting to lose.  When you came into his house you could listen to an old radio playing marimba music. While Ixkotzij's mother and sister where preparing food in the kitchen, she asked her grandfather the question she had planned for this visit.  "Grandpa, why are people in the city saying that the world will end in 2012? What are all those Maya prophecies about? And how come you never told me anything about it? I think that is not fair, you never warned us."

This is the first in a series of short stories written by Mayan Ajq'ij (spiritual guide) Lina Barrios from Guatemala.  These stories are meant to share the knowledge and wisdom of the Mayan peoples with the world.

In order to keep the long-standing tradition, Ixkab' (woman of honey) finishes the third and final cloth used to make a huipil (blouse) for her youngest daughter. Her heart is joyful, she has woven all the necessary cloths to make her husband's, daughter's and her own clothing. Early in the morning she will give her beloved husband all the cloths so he can begin putting them together to maintain the complement of energies. He will sit in their house, at the corridor, for 20 days with a basket full of threads to sew the huipiles, cortes (skirts), trousers and shirts, and he will have them ready before the Hab' (the New Year) so that the whole family will wear new clothes.

He has enough time, as it is still 25 days to the Hab'. He will sew for 20 days, until the start of the month prior to the New Year, known as the Tz'apil.  The Tz'apil is a month of only five days, which are used for purification in order to begin the New Year with a clean body, spirit, heart and mind – as well as with new clothes.

NAJT PORTAL - AB’ MAYA NEW YEAR Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Tuesday, February 22 2011

The Maya civilization is one of the most extraordinary that has existed. They are know as THE LORDS OF TIME with their high technology, deep knowledge of time, mathematics, astronomy, architecture and the advances they made on medicine and all the fields of human knowledge - which still amaze us.
For the Maya world the NAJT is the convergence of Space and Time in one unique place, which, when you add movement and speed, gives us the configuration and perception of REALITY.

We are facing transcendent times. On December 21, 2010, two cosmic events converged: the Winter Solstice and a Full Moon Eclipse. This day opened a Cosmic-Telluric portal, which is the preamble for the famous change of Cycle, the end of the 5,200 years and the coming of the JOB AJAW on December 21, 2012.

Message for the Winter Solstice Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Tuesday, December 21 2010

The following message was delivered by Carlos Barrios and translated by his daughter Denise. Be sure to click on "read more" below for the full message.

The Winter Solstice is the day in which the night is longer than the day. To many of the ancient civilizations this date marked the beginning of the year. The Maya Elders say that during this moment, the Sun is young and it is the perfect time to plan our purposes for this New Year. We must take this opportunity to ask for our personal and common wishes, bearing in mind that what's most important is to ask for light and harmony, specially for Mother Earth; to pray for peace and spiritual growth.

Message from the Mayan Elders - February, 2006 Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Saturday, February 11 2006

by Carlos Barrios
A lot has been said about this time, about the prophecies given by ancient wise visionary men. Some of the prophecies have been kept on secret books, some have been transmitted in a verbal way, others have risen in a series of books, documentaries, articles in magazines, newspapers and especially on the Internet. Some are extremely alarming, others have no basis and many are based on the Prophecies of the Great Traditions. All of them point out the prophetical times, as the Wise Chi Mam Maya, Don Pascual liked to call them.

All this information has wakened the interest of millions of people, but it has also created a lot of confusion and fear, since the date of December 21 of 2012 has been used as the date of the end of the World. However, this date points out the beginning of a new cycle, which is marked in the tradition of the Mayan Elders as a time of harmony and spiritual growing, this cycle is called the FIFTH SUN and each of the previous ones lasted 5,200 years.

A Call from the Mayan Elders To the Human Race Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

By Carlos Barrios

"The light is within us; let us work for our destiny-our destiny to better the human race. Let us become more aware of our actions; let us be more compassionate to our fellow human begins and to ourselves." This is a call for us to listen to our Mayan Elders.

Don Pascual (a Mayan elder) would tell me "we are living in the time of the Prophecy, a difficult time." Don Pascual was a member of the Clan de Aguila (The Eagle Clan) my mentor, and my spiritual guide and was one of the greatest wise men. Don Pascual belonged to one of the oldest organizations in the Mayan World, believed be over thousand years old. Not only did they preserve the pure magic and mystic of the ancestral world back then, but the same tradition has been preserved and is still being followed to this day. Don Pascual was a Chimam (Aj'qij), a wise Shaman, belonging to the nation of the MAM (the oldest people) located in Huehuetenengo, Guatemala.

URGENT CALL FROM THE MAYAN ELDERS OF GUATEMALA, 1/10/2005 Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Monday, January 10 2005
Contributed by: Admin

Through the ancient techniques of divination and tools of prophecy, the Mayan elders are calling forth to humanity at THIS TIME to pay closer attention to the messages being sent forth by the mother earth and to immediately take the actions they have been calling for, to unite in an effort to bring balance again upon our planet. The recent destruction that manifested in Indonesia is predicted to now occur rapidly upon five continents of the earth. This message is not meant to induce fear, to the contrary, it is a call for bravery and for action. The elders are concerned about what has been presented in their recent divinations and they call to all humanity to warn their leaders and to work very hard at a spiritual level to prevent the impending destruction. This message, verified and brought forth by various Mayan elders in Guatemala, is for all of humanity. The hurricanes in the US and the earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia have been warnings and we must now pay attention or the possibilities of floods in Europe, Los Angeles, earthquakes and other efforts of the mother earth to awaken us will manifest quickly.

There is a specific call for people around the world to join in prayer, meditation or whatever method of spirituality one engages in to unite on January 18th at the time of their local sunset (approx 6:00PM). This date is B'elejeb(9) Keme according to the sacred Mayan Cholqij calendar and has the potential for protecting humanity from disaster.

There will be many major ceremonies in the Mayan communities for this purpose. An open invitation is extended to humanity that wish to join the Mayan people for the Waxaqib Batz ceremonies on February 12th in Guatemala.
Again, this is a strong message, not meant to drive us to react in fear, for this will only negatively impact the level of destruction and our own circumstance. This is the opportunity for humanity to rise to the occasion and come together along the strong lines that unite us and overcome the obstacles that divide us. Please distribute this message widely.

Message issued by Mayan elders in Guatemala and delivered via:
Carlos Barrios, Mayan Ajqij, Antigua, Guatemala
Adam Rubel, Co-Director, Saq Be: Organization for Mayan and Indigenous Spiritual Studies

LET'S BE HUMANS AGAIN Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

"We sell ourselves to be able to buy that which doesn't serve us, and when what we really need comes before us we no longer have the means left to acquire it"

Absalon Uyawayaska
Wise Man from the Amazon

By Carlos Barrios

Today, I have been contemplating life and the good fortune of being which we have been gifted. Why is it we exist? It is because existing has given us the awareness of our being and the ability to say we are alive and cognizant. Our consciousness is the alignment and harmonization of our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual being along with the confounded presence of reason, trying to fulfill all the empty spaces of life. All this while accepting the integrity within our soul and joining through the force of the real essence, which has been designated "spirit". You simply have to feel it as a light, with the magical essence representing that which joins us to everything, to the original vibration, where the creation that leads to reality emerges.
